LOS LONELY BOYS COTTONFIELDS AND CROSSROADS AIRS ON PBS

Documentarian Hector Galan gives us the first in-depth look at Los Lonely Boys, a band out of the small town of San Angelo, Texas. At the time of filming they were a local band favorite. Since then they have gone on to garner worldwide attention for their music. This documentary gives you a peek at how it all got started and a chance to get to know these three brothers.

The Garza Brothers have had one very busy summer. Los Lonely Boys Rock Knoxville

The historic Bijou Theater in Knoxville, Tennessee was nearly full when opening trio Dave Barnes took the stage right on time at 8:00 p.m. The crowd responded enthusiastically as Barnes launched into “Crazyboutya,” a song that forced the people there to move. Barnes, who just happened to attend high school in Knoxville, seemed right at home when someone in the crowd yelled “Go Vols!”, a reference to the University of Tennessee campus nearby. If you’re a John Mayer or Matt Wertz fan, don’t miss Dave Barnes. His shows are entertaining and his down to earth personality make him irresistible.

As soon as the Garza brothers (a.k.a. Los Lonely Boys) took the stage – Henry on the guitar, Jojo on the bass and Ringo on the drums – the audience was in for a great ride. The responding roar left no doubt about the upcoming trip when Henry cried out, “Whatchu say Knoxville! You ready for some Rock & Roll?”

Los Lonely Boys display so much energy on stage that it’s impossible to not be touched by it. The trio opened with “Heart Won’t Tell a Lie,” a track from their newest album, “Forgiven,” released earlier this year. The energy grew ferocious on “Man to Beat,” with the brothers bouncing together center stage.

Growing up in San Angelo, Texas, the Garza brothers were exposed to music at an early age by their father, Enrique Garza Sr., a longtime conjunto (a genre of Mexican music) and country musician who played with his seven brothers in a band called The Falcones.

The brothers sang backup for their father all through the 1970s, 1980s and early 1990s. They eventually created their own music style and started their own band.  The band’s climb to fame from playing roadside cantinas and honky tonks as teens was chronicled in the documentary Cottonfields and Crossroads.

Los Lonely Boys style and diversity was made evident on songs like “What I Want To Say,” probing and reflective with “I Never Met a Woman” and flat out rock and roll on a stirring 9-minute cover version of the Spencer Davis Group standard “I’m A Man.”

As one audience member summed up the show “Wild Abandon – is the phrase that comes to mind to describe their show and the feeling I had watching them.  They are passionate and the love they have for what they are doing penetrates my soul.”

The show could not have been complete without the boys returning to the stage to thank the audience for their support and close with their breakthrough hit single “Heaven.” The song reached the No. 1 spot on the Adult Contemporary chart in 2004 and ranked No. 16 on the Billboard Hot 100.  The song also won a Grammy Award for Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal in 2005.

Henry wasn’t kidding when he asked Knoxville if it wanted to rock and roll. The Los Lonely Boys rock!

Filter the blues with a little Rio Grande water and you’ve got the sound created by Los Lonely Boys.

The comparisons with Carlos Santana are more than apt, but the brothers Garza — Henry on guitar, JoJo on bass, the appropriately named Ringo on drums and all three on vocals — mix in a Tex-blues vibe that adds guitar-driven rock heft to their blues music and a heartfelt blues tone to their rock music.

The Boys’ latest disc, “Forgiven,” came out this summer on Epic Records. Their third studio album, “Forgiven” shows the trio’s versatility with the crunching opener “Heart Won’t Tell a Lie,” the pop smoothness of “Staying With Me,” the breezy Latin folk of “Loving You Always” and the psychedelic wah-wah of “I’m A Man,” a cover of the tune by the Spencer Davis Group.

LOS ANGELES (Billboard) – “La Bamba” was the first Spanish-language song to hit No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart, and its universal catchiness has led to big business for the hundreds-of-years-old Mexican folk tune.

Singer-songwriter Ritchie Valens’ “La Bamba” made it to No. 22 on the chart in 1959 — the year of his untimely death in a plane crash — but it wasn’t until 1987 that the song reached No. 1, in the form of Los Angeles band Los Lobos’ cover of the song from the Valens biopic “La Bamba.”

The soundtrack from the movie shipped more than 2 million copies, according to the Recording Industry Association of America. That success ushered in “La Bamba” covers by everyone from regional Mexican stars Selena and Valentin Elizalde to Wyclef Jean, Jose Feliciano and animation character Dora the Explorer (featuring Los Lonely Boys). Don Ho and Dusty Springfield also have recorded the song; Valens’ copyrighted arrangement has had 1,187 licenses for mechanical and digital use registered with the Harry Fox Agency (HFA) since it was added to the agency’s system in 1973.

“There’s so few songs that have over a thousand licenses,” HFA Latin licensing agent Eduardo Morales said. “It’s basically things like Christmas songs, ‘La Bamba’ and ‘Happy Birthday.'”

The song’s popularity has remained strong, with publisher EMI Longitud issuing licenses for everything from karaoke machines to fitness videos, children’s musical toys and “American Idol: World’s Worst Auditions.”

A recent license for “La Bamba” went to Sega for its rhythmic videogame “Samba de Amigo,” which is being released for the Wii after previous incarnations in arcades and on Dreamcast.
